Members of the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes are expected to join the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Charlestown, R.I., Saturday in protesting last month’s U.S. Supreme Court decision limiting tribal expansion. The “March for Justice,” organized by the United for Justice Campaign, will organize at 11 a.m. at the Broad Street entrance to Roger Williams Park in Providence. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by the march to the Rhode Island State House at noon and a rally there at 1:30 p.m.
The tribes have been critical of the court’s Carcieri v. Salazar decision, which found that the federal government cannot take land into trust for tribes that were not federally recognized in 1934, when the Indian Reorganization Act was enacted.
