MONTPELIER — A House committee voted out a bill Friday afternoon that would require Vermont Yankee’s owners to make $459 million in payments over the next 11 years for the nuclear power plant’s decommissioning if it is not relicensed beyond 2012.

The bill, if it becomes law, could put the plant out of business before 2012 and would prompt legal action, said Jay Thayer, vice president for operations at Entergy Corp., the plant’s owner.

The House Natural Resources and Energy Committee voted 8-2 for the bill that would also require Vermont Yankee to be decommissioned within 10 years instead of the 60-year timeframe now allowed.
