BROWNING, Mont.—John Elway made my son cry — and I’ll be forever grateful.
After a column by sportswriter Rick Reilly in the March 9 issue of ESPN The Magazine, my son Jake Burns became the most talked-about 13-year-old boy in the football world — and in the Blackfeet Reservation town of Browning, Mont. Sadly, Jake’s fame came out of unfortunate circumstances.
Last year Jake lost his father, Robert “Lil Bob” Burns Jr., to liver failure at the young age of 41. In the 12 years they spent together, Lil Bob and Jake shared many things, but their ultimate passion was love of the Denver Broncos and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway. Lil Bob and Jake watched Bronco games together and read anything they could find on John Elway.
