A Denver jury will soon decide if former professor Ward Churchill was fired from the University of Colorado for writing a controversial essay or if he is an academic fraud who deserved to lose his job.
Opening statements in the trial are expected this week, and more than 30 witnesses are scheduled to testify, including University of Colorado regents, former university president Hank Brown and former Gov. Bill Owens, who publicly called for Churchill to resign.
In January 2005, Churchill’s essay “Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens” was picked up by local and national media, particularly one line that compared some victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to Nazis
