An important international gathering will soon take place in Sonora, Mexico, to discuss the permanent protection of the O’odham sacred site at Quitovac.
You may recall, in July 2008 the Mexican company CEGIR withdrew its proposal to build the hazardous waste dump, which endangered not only Quitovac, a place that’s central to the origins of the O’odham, but also the O’ohdam People themselves.
CEGIR would have brought in anywhere up to 45,000 tons of hazardous materials a year: from asbestos and radioactive material, to aliphatic peroxides, compressed gasses, explosives, and infectious biological waste.
The O’odham would have been exposed to these materials through their release into the land and air. Their local source of water would have also been contaminated.
Well, the O’odham Voice Against the Wall learned in December that CEGIR has re-initiated its plans to build the dump site.
The upcoming Gathering, which will take place on March 28, 2009, will be dedicated to halting CEGIR once again, and ensuring the sacred site will be permanently protected.

Protect the O’odham Sacred Site at Quitovac: Gathering Mar. 28, 2009
This email is being sent to you to alert you of a gathering taking place this March 28, 2009 in Quitovac, Sonora, Mexico. This email is also an alert to let you know that plans to dump toxic waste near the O’odham sacred site of Quitovac have been re initiated.
Many of you may remember that a company in Mexico (CEGIR) has been trying to dump toxic waste near the O’odham sacred site at Quitovac. Last March we had a gathering at Quitovac to organize against the dump. You can read about last years gathering here: O’odham Leaders and International Supporters Meet in Quitovac to Stop Toxic Dump – www.tiamatpublications.com/O_S_P_Quitovac_3_29_08.html
In July of 2008 Greenaction was notified by the US EPA that the dump project had been haulted. You can read the EPA letter by clicking here: www.tiamatpublications.com/docs/EPA_Quitovac_Victory.pdf.
Unfortuantely, in December of 2008 the O’odham Voice Against the Wall learned that CEGIR has re initiated its plans to build a toxic dump near Quitovac.
In response, we are organizing another international gathering in Quitovac (Sonora, Mexico) this March 28. At this gathering we will discuss ways to permanently protect the area of Quitovac.
We are asking all supporters to do at least one of the following three things:
