STUDENT Alex Young visited the Chernobyl nuclear power station and the nearby abandoned city of Pripyat to study how nature takes over after people leave an area. Alex, who lives in Grantham, is studying for a National Diploma in countryside management at Brooksby College, Melton, and visited the scene of the disaster on a recent trip to the Ukraine.
In April 1986 a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl plant exploded, causing a massive cloud of radioactive fallout to contaminate a wide area. To prevent people from being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation Pripyat – founded in 1970 – was abandoned.
