The Dept. of Energy confirmed today that the first Oak Ridge shipment of remote-handled transuranic waste — the hottest radioactive waste in the Oak Ridge inventory — had safely reached the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.

According to DOE, the shipment left Oak Ridge early Feb. 26 and arrived at WIPP, nearl Carlsbad, N.M., on Feb. 27. The timing means that the Dept. of Energy’s met its deadline with environmental regulators.

Under terms of the Federal Facilities Agreement with EPA and the state Dept. of Environment and Conservation, DOE was required to ship the first quantities of remote-handled TRU waste by Feb. 28.
