The decision as to how to handle the disturbance of burial mounds on Betty’s Neck is on hold until the Wampanoags reach a decision and present this decision to the Cemetery Commission.
At the Cemetery Commission meeting last Tuesday, author Jean Douillette presented her DVD to the commission before the group discussed new signs, fencing, and other projects for some of the cemeteries in the area.
Last spring when two women were refused admittance by neighbors to see headstones that were described in Jean Douilllette’s book, “Lakeville, Massachusetts Gravestone Inscriptions, 1711-2003,” they approached the Cemetery Commission to try and settle the issue. The commission began a thorough investigation with the help of author and astronomer Ken Leonard, Mrs. Douillette, and Wampanoag representative Darrell Wixon.
