A LEEDS atomic test veteran who fought for compensation after he witnessed “horrendous” nuclear bomb blasts died of a cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

But an inquest into the death of William O’Neill could not rule out that exposure to huge amounts of radiation while he was stationed on Christmas Island in the 1950s contributed to the disease which claimed his life.

The inquest at Wakefield Coroner’s Court heard that Mr O’Neill, 70, of Willow Close, Burley, had served on Christmas Island for 312 days between June 1958 and April 1959.
