Last native creatures disappeared at turn of the 20th century
A confirmed sea otter sighting in the waters of Depoe Bay has sent a ripple of excitement through marine science enthusiasts.
First spotted Wednesday and again yesterday (Thursday), the plucky marine mammal has piqued interest and raised many questions about whether it’s just visiting or trying to establish residency. Jim Estes, an internationally recognized sea otter expert, confirmed that the visitor is a sea otter – a rare sight in Oregon near-shore waters these days.
