A-bomb test veteran dies in cancer riddle

A SOUTH Tyneside father who witnessed Britain’s first atomic bomb test has died from a mystery cancer.

George Sidney West, who was known as Sonny, from Horsley Hill, South Shields, spent almost 50 years at sea serving as a commodore chef in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

In the late 1950s his job took him to Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean, where the British Government carried out nuclear explosion tests.
