After listening to elder Bear speak inside the tipi, Jade Watson knelt beside the fire, closed her eyes and sprinkled tobacco and cedar onto the flames while she murmured a prayer.

Watson, 19, was one of several people who visited the tipi at Trent University on Saturday for the 32nd annual Elders and Traditional Peoples Gathering.

“It felt cleansing, empowering and inspirational,” said Watson, a Fleming College ecosystems management student. “It was the perfect way to end the day.”
