A shipment of radioactive waste from Perma-Fix Environmental’s M&EC facility in Oak Ridge arrived Monday at the Nevada Test Site.

It was first waste sent by Perma-Fix to NTS for disposal since the Department of Energy barred the company last fall. The temporary ban followed a couple of waste shipments — one from Oak Ridge, the other from Richland, Wash. — that failed to meet acceptance criteria because of rad contamination on the exterior of containers.

DOE last month lifted the ban on shipments from the M&EC facility, but there remains a hold on shipments from the company’s facilities at Richland and at Gainesville, Fla., where an audit by a team from NTS is taking place this week, according to DOE spokeswoman Kelly Snyder.
