UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — US President Barack Obama has offered to engage with Iran if its leaders “unclenched their fist” as his new UN ambassador pledged “direct” diplomacy with the Islamist republic as long as Tehran halts uranium enrichment.

Susan Rice told reporters on Monday that the Obama administration looked forward to “engaging in vigorous diplomacy that includes direct diplomacy with Iran, as well as continued collaboration and partnership with” the four other permanent members of the UN Security Council along with Germany.

“We will look at what is necessary and appropriate with respect to maintaining pressure toward that goal of ending Iran’s nuclear program,” she added.
