OAK RIDGE – Oak Ridge contractors could be hiring hundreds of additional cleanup workers if a Department of Energy proposal is funded as part of the government’s economic stimulus package.

DOE is pushing a plan that would accelerate cleanup action at sites around the country, including Oak Ridge, and reportedly create as many as 10,000 jobs if the government is willing to invest about $6 billion over the next four years.

“I just think it would be great for Oak Ridge,” said Jenny Freeman of the Energy, Technology and Environmental Business Association, whose members include most of the companies involved in DOE-sponsored cleanup program.
