The Seoul government first proposed the idea of buying North Korea’s unused fuel rods in 2007 as part of efforts to help expedite efforts to end the North’s nuclear ambition.

“The group will conduct an on-site review of the commercial value of the North’s unused fuel rods in a careful manner,” a ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

North Korea is believed to have about 14,000 unused fuel rods that can be used in making 100 tons of uranium, which would cost around $11 million, experts say.
