Efforts to bring nuclear energy to Alberta have been dealt a minor delay by Bruce Power’s withdrawal of an application to build reactors near Peace River, says the company.

But the Ontario-based outfit admits it withdrew the application for the 4,000-megawatt facility partly due to environmental concerns while insisting a second site nearby could be its chosen location for a plant, said company spokesman John Peevers.

“There were some real concerns … with respect to the environmental protection of the lake itself and the proximity of the Grimshaw gravel aquifer,” Peevers said of the Lac Cardinal location 30 km west of Peace River.
