Negotiations to draft new deadlines for cleaning up the Hanford nuclear reservation appear to be moving slowly, if at all, and top state officials are due in the Tri-Cities today to announce their next step.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has said if it appears the talks are deadlocked and no agreement can be reached by the time the new presidential administration takes office, the state would be prepared to take legal action.

Among state officials who will meet with Tri-City leaders and media today are Jay Manning, director of the Washington State Department of Ecology, and Mary Sue Wilson, the state senior assistant attorney general assigned to negotiations, according to an Ecology spokesman.
