BERKELEY, Calif.—Julian NoiseCat was headman dancer at this year’s Berkeley Indigenous Peoples Day Powwow—”a big honor,” he admitted, for a 15 year old.
“I led out the dancers and had a special contest and small giveaway as part of my giving back to the community,” said NoiseCat, enrolled in the Canim Lake Band of the Shuswap Nation, a Canadian tribe.
“For me,” NoiseCat said, “being asked to be the headman dancer symbolized a crossing over from being a teenager to a man in the powwow world.”
