A senior nuclear official of the Islamic Republic says Iranian engineers are fully prepared to operate the country’s first nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

Ahmad Fayazbakhsh, the deputy director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said that about 700 Iranian engineers have been trained in Russia over the past four years and some of them have worked at Russian nuclear power plants, IRNA reported.

He noted that once the Bushehr power plant is complete, it will be run entirely by Iranian engineers.

Fayazbakhsh announced that the nuclear plant is scheduled to become operational in 2009, as previously planned.

Atomstroiexport, Russia’s state-run nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly, has been helping Iran build its first nuclear power plant in Bushehr over the past decade.
